Laid Bare

From the tree to the pefect planks of wood specified for use in the furniture industry, on average about 50% of the material is lost as waste due to problematics from naturally occurring abnormalities to shaping the wood by cutting and planing. My project seeks not only to highlight this loss, but more importantly to question the notion of perfect wood in furniture making. By molding the waste material into joints and seats, my family of furniture offers a sharp contrast between established ideas of perfect wood and what has previously been considered waste in order to reevaluate and reinvent this forsaken material as perfect in its own right.
